Black Hawk Down (2001)
Black Hawk Down premiered in the United States during Christmas of 2001. The months after the September 11th attacks were an excruciating, angry time for many. Our marines had just begun their tour of Afghanistan. America had war fever. Black Hawk Down satisfied that itch. This must have been a state-of-the-art, spectacular sounding film back then. Technically speaking, it was a step into a whole new direction after the masterful battle sequences of Saving Private Ryan. But 18 years later, and with the over saturation of violent video games, this film is not really a pleasure to watch. One sentence describes it all. An endless stream of shooting, yelling and exploding. It goes on, and on, and on. If you ever wanted to watch a film through the POV of an American soldier, maybe Black Hawk Down is for you. But in terms of films that encapsulate the agony of war, there are much better ones out there.
