BAD REVIEW: Out of the Furnace (2013)
Is there a Christian Bale movie not entertaining? Yes, I've found one. Out of the Furnace is a spectacularly dull movie. What's even more disappointing, is that it starts out terrific. We are introduced to Woody Harrelson as the animalistic antagonist in a phenomenally directed prologue. We get to know right off the bat, that he's a scumbag, and we are in for something we can't handle. Then, we get to the next scene, and the movie completely derails. It went from a 10 to a 2 this quickly. It's a phony blue-collar drama. A Bruce Springsteen song with violence. I hated it. All the great acting in the movie just gets tarnished because of it. Now, Christian Bale is good here, and so is Casey Affleck. That's the good acting I'm talking about. Everything alternating from grit, to the humor of the feel-good working man, I felt like I was wasting my time. A major misstep for everyone involved.
